Low energy landscape maintenance in the energy efficient buildings place "Žalieji Leliai"

This project will adapt the most important principles of sustainable landscapes: rational use of natural and human resources, development and protection of ecosystems, food production, pollution reduction and building waste reuse. 

Most of the green areas will be planted perennial flowers and ornamental grasses. Designed even 32 different perennial species, characterized by a strong structure, a distinctive form,  a subtle colour palette, resistance to local climatic conditions. High species diversity will ensure continuous flowering during the warm season and interesting seed store, a pleasant autumn colors, stunning winter silhouettes will create an attractive image in winter time. 

Everything garden needs for the maintenance is cuting over ground part of plants in early spring.  Irrigation, fertilization, regular mowing and other routine lawn maintenance will be forgotten. In this way, nature is not polluted by fertilizers, saving water and human resources, avoiding noise of trimmer. This type of herbaceous vegetation, unlike the sterile maintenance lawns, creates an attractive niche for beneficial animals: insects, pollinators, birds, butterflies, earthworms. Their well-being is important not only for people responsible for sustainable living, but also for those who are interesting in geting healthy and plenty garden harvest. 

In order to promote food growing culture were selected these plant species that are not only decorative, have protective and structural functions, but also growing fruits, berries and nuts. Designed edible dogwoods hedges not only protect the area from the winds, but also will provide vitamin enriched berries. Also designed Corylus colurna, Juglans regia, Actinidia arguta. The latter plants will be bring from Lithuanian plants growers. So, it is likely that they perfectly wiil grow in local climate conditions. 

Plants in the territory designed the way they overshadow the surface, which tend to absorb heat. This will reduce urban heat island effect. This is a phenomenon in which the local temperature of the area because of the urbanization is higher than the surrounding areas. This has negative impact on ecosystems, increases ozone formation. 

It  is designed a small rain garden, whose function is to absorb contaminants such as cars emissions of petroleum products. This will reduces the pollution of groundwater, rivers and other water bodies. 

Building waste will be used for paths creation.  It will encourage waste reuse apply in landscaping area.
